Project Valentine's Day - February 14

Equality UUCF and the People of Faith for Northern Virginia invite you to come and “Stand on the Side of Love” for Marriage Equality. On 14 February at 2pm, Karen Rasmussen and Barb Brehn, who are both retired Navy veterans and have been domestic partners for 26 years, will be filing for a marriage license. The event will take place at the Fiarfax County Courthouse at 4100 Chain Bridge Road, Fairfax, Virginia.

This is a huge step for Karen and Barb. Other gay and lesbian couples who would like to take this step are welcome to participate in our reverent demonstration. Please join us as we gather at 1:30, the filing will be at 2:00 with Rev. Mary Katherine Morn and Rev. Amanda Poppie speaking immediately afterwards. We’ll close with a candlelight vigil.

Come and stand with us! Bear witness as we ask on this Valentine’s Day, this day of love, to be granted our civil right to marry.

Next Starting Point Class Series - Wednesdays, February 15, 22, & 29

Unitarian Universalism invites people into a different way of being in the world rather than trying to convince people to "think rightly" about the world. But what is that "different way of being"? That's what Starting Point is designed to answer.

If you are a new member or have just discovered UUCR, or if you've been a member for a while and are looking to reconnect with your Unitarian Universalism, this class is for you! Not only will it help you decide if UUism is right for you, but it will also help you become more connected to other members and find your place here at UUCR. Our minister, Rev. Erin Gingrich, will facilitate.

The class will run from 7:30-9:30pm, and pre-registration and pre-reading is required. For more information, please contact Abbie Edwards or Anne Thomas, Co-Chairs of the Membership Committee.

Helping Hungry Kids - ongoing

Helping Hungry Kids (HHK) is in its third year of providing week-end food packs during the school year for children who qualify for free or subsidized meals at Reston area schools. Dogwood Elementary school receives 150 packs weekly at a cost of approximately $6.00 each. HHK also provides packs and food for pantries at Forest Edge, Lake Anne schools and Falls Bridge Alternative High School. Every penny goes directly to food for our hungry children. Each pack contains food for 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 dinners, 2-3 snacks, milk, 2 fruit cups at an approximate cost of $6.00/pack.

HHK really needs your help! As a volunteer: (i.e., 1-2 hours at our monthly Giant Fox Mill food drives); with bringing donations of food to church (see list and container for donations in foyer of UUCR); with tax-deductible monetary contributions (make out checks to UUCR with "For HHK" in memo section). Please contact Connie Laurent-Roy at 703-405-1648 for further information.

Hypothermia Prevention Program - January through March

We hope that we will have the membership support this year to do all Fridays in January – March. The Social Action Committee can accept financial donations (checks made out to UUCR annotated for Social Action Hypothermia) to help defray the expected $1200+ cost of food purchases. Please sign up on the Hypothermia Helpers sheet at the rear of the sanctuary if you are interested in helping with any of our program activities, either as an individual or as a group. Please contact Abbie Edwards (abbiedwards@aol.com) or Ann Youngren (rayoungren@verizon.net) for more information.

Success at VOICE Action January 29

Twenty-six people from UUCR attended the VOICE (Virginians Organized for Interfaith Community Engagement) Dental Action on Sunday afternoon, January 29th. Thanks to each of you who participated! I am so proud of our congregation. Our very own Steve Ewart took to the stage at the high point of the action to ask State Senator Janet Howell and Sharon Bulova, Chair of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, to report back on their progress and make commitments to continue to work with VOICE to locate the remaining funding we need to match the $100,000 donation VOICE was given to fund a dentist at a clinic in Sterling for the next two years. (read more)
