Fellowship and Fun

The Unitarian Universalist Church in Reston (UUCR) has many ways for you to get involved in our community. Here are just some of the fun activities our members enjoy.

Annual Auction & Community Yard Sale

Each year, UUCR raises programming funds outside the annual stewardship campaign through a variety of events. The annual auction, held in November of each year, and the bi-annual Community Yard Sale in June add an additional $20,000 to $30,000 to our annual budget. At the auction, you can bid on theme dinners, art objects, services, and an array of goodies. It is always a wonderful social event that serves to provide funds for UUCR as well as many opportunities to build relationships among our members and friends. The Community Yard Sale is the perfect time to clean out your closets and pass on unwanted items while benefitting the church – a win-win combination!

Cards & Fun

Once a month, a group of members and friends gathers in the church or at someone’s home to enjoy a friendly card game and refreshing libations. All are welcome – no experience required! For more information, please contact Bob Narod.

Films on Friday

Once a month, UUCR hosts Films on Friday in the sanctuary. This event is open to anyone interested in seeing, and then discussing, a great film. Independent movies are often shown, bringing a delightful variety of cinema to our audience that many might not otherwise see. It’s a great way to enjoy a film and the company of old and new friends in a cozy setting. For more information, please contact Judith Loomis or Bill Green.

Hospitality

Members of our Hospitality Committee do the most underappreciated work at UUCR – kitchen duty! They are responsible for making sure our kitchen and pantry is well stocked, clean, organized, and always ready to support our many social functions. This includes planning and preparing for coffee and refreshments at our weekly services and coordinating volunteers to provide similar items for other meetings and activities. For more information, please contact Shauna McAuliffe.

Pancake Breakfasts

During the church year, we have occasional pancake breakfasts at which delicious pancakes, bacon, and sausage are served before and between services. Always a big hit on cold fall and winter mornings, the breakfasts also serve as important fundraisers for our church. It’s a great way to catch up with old friends or make new friends! For more information, please contact Dan Beavin.

Quilt Group

The Quilt Group meets roughly once a month to share projects, new books, and fabric; plan for the annual UUCR auction quilt; the annual UUCR quilt show in February; as well as other projects which have included in the past; quilt challenges (the results of which are usually on display at the show in February); a recurring show at Whole Foods in Reston, and at other local shows and activities. The group also arranges outings to local quilt stores, quilt shows, and art galleries focusing on quilts or textiles. In addition, over the last couple of years, the Quilt Group has held quilting workshops with guest teachers as well as all-day "Sew-Ins" at the church. For more information, please contact Connie Wright-Zink.

Scandinavian Dinner

Our annual Scandinavian Dinner has become a tradition, as people of all backgrounds and nationalities celebrate the wonderful foods of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland. Whatever your heritage or ethnicity, you’re sure to enjoy the fantastic fare and great company to be found at this dinner! For more information, please contact Eddi Carlson.

Scrabble Group

Enjoy a challenging game of Scrabble and great conversation? Join the Scrabble group, where we get together each week to match wits and keep our minds sharp, all while having fun in a relaxed setting. No experience required, and you’ll have a w-o-n-d-e-r-f-u-l time! For more information, please contact Linda Holloway.

Souper Thursday

There’s nothing better on a brisk fall or winter day than a hot bowl of soup, a salad, fresh bread, and the company of friends. Souper Thursdays are held monthly at lunchtime throughout the church year, and everyone is invited to attend. It’s one of the warmest places in Reston to be, and a great way to catch up with folks on everything that’s going on at UUCR. For more information, please contact Ed Nussbaum or Linda Holloway.

Women's Book Club

The UUCR Women's Book Club meets monthly, February through November, to discuss a variety of fiction and nonfiction books (and other topics, too, although we try keep the conversation from wandering too much!). Books are chosen by the group at a Saturday afternoon retreat in January. Selections can vary from serious history to mystery novels and everything in between. Meetings are held the third Friday evening of each month in various members' homes. Refreshments are potluck, and all are welcome, even those who haven't read the book yet. For information on the current month's meeting, contact Terry Ayotte.
