"We are a community of memory and hope."
When someone dies, we want to remember that person in a ceremony that marks their passing and honors their memory with warmth and dignity. Some Unitarian Universalists believe in heaven and traditional immortality, but many more believe people live on in the memories of those who loved them, in the example they set for others, and in the legacy of deeds that continue to benefit the world after they have gone. Unitarian Universalist memorial services celebrate the lives of those who have died so that we may remember them well and learn how to live our own lives more fully.
Our tradition upholds the inherent worth and dignity of each person. At UUCR we honor those who have died with a celebration of life, a service that shares their life and meaning. One of our ministers meets with families once or twice to talk about their loved one and to plan a service. Careful attention is given to pastoral care and each unique expression of grief, and careful consideration to the thoughts, feelings, and well being of the family, as well as to the unique life of the deceased. Families are encouraged to choose meaningful readings and music. Eulogies are specially written for each person. Families without religious affiliations, or with several religious affiliations, may choose to honor the lives of their loved ones in our Sanctuary, or our ministers will gladly conduct a service in a funeral home.
All services are free for members. Non-members are charged a fee. If you would like to know more, or would like to schedule a service, please contact Reverends Sydney Wilde or Dennis Daniel at 703 796-1236, or email to
