Although the Social Justice Committee is based in the Unitarian Universalist Church in Reston, it is nevertheless an interfaith body with a membership that comprises a variety of faith traditions, worship communities and secular organizations.

In addition, many of our members belong to other progressive and activist organizations throughout Virginia. These relationships extend our reach beyond the walls of this particular church, multiply our organizational strength, and afford us a kind of social leverage that enables us to accomplish tasks ordinarily beyond the capabilities of a group of our size.

As a result, in a relatively short period of time we have had a demonstrable effect on local issues. We have already had significant victories in the areas of affordable housing and civil liberties, and other projects are now underway, including a living wage enactment in Fairfax County; abolition of the death penalty in Virginia; various human rights efforts, voter equity; and immigrant civil rights.

There are many other issues that need to be addressed and we urge you to bring them to us and to join us in working on them — whether or not you are a member of our church. We hope to be an organization where dedicated individuals can bring their passions and turn them into projects.

Come talk with us. We meet on the first Saturday of every month, 10:00 AM to 12::00 PM, from October through June, in the church Sanctuary at 1625 Wiehle Avenue, Reston, Virginia. 703 742-7992.

We look forward to seeing you then.

Hank Blakely
Committee Chair
