UUCR has offered a liberal religious alternative
to the Reston area for over 25 years. Beginning as a small fellowship, a dedicated group of local UUs founded the church as the Reston Community Church, engaged a minister, and financed a multi-purpose building.
UUCR grew and prospered under the activist leadership of the late Rev. John M. Wells with increased involvement in local, social and civic projects through its association with the Reston Interfaith organization. In appreciation of his devoted years of service the members elected Rev. Wells Minster Emeritus in 1987.
In the fall of 1986 we changed our name to the Unitarian Universalist Church in Reston to emphasize our denominational affiliation and to reflect our growing membership. The Rev. Josiah Bartlett served as interim minister in 1987-88 supporting a Long Range Planning process which included renovating the kitchen and paving the parking lot.
In 1988 UUCR called the Rev. Tim Haley who served as minister until 1991, helping to increase growth and foster community spirit.
After the Rev. Tim Haley resigned the Rev. Pricilla Murdock served as UUCR's interim minister.
In 1992 the Rev. Dr. Gretchen Woods became our settled minister. In 1999 she accepted a position at a UU church in Oregon so she could be closer to her sons.
For the last year we have had two interim ministers, first the Rev. Michael Boblett and the Rev. Betty Jo Middleton.
Our newest ministers are the Rev. Sydney Kay Wilde and Rev. Dennis J. Daniel, a husband and wife co-ministry team
